Regional Varieties shine in McLaren Vale
The CARTeSIAN McLaren Vale Wine Show produced an array of alternative variety winners in 2011.
International Judge, Lisa Perrotti-Brown .. “It was an incredibly packed week judging at the McLaren Vale wine show. Got a great overview of the recent vintages and the new trends for this region. A lot of exciting new grape varieties are emerging with less emphasis on vines that clearly can't excel in this region (eg Sauvignon) and increased plantings of warmer climate / more expressive grapes such as Fiano, Vermentino, Grenache and Mataro.
I was very pleased with the results of the show, which I think was very just and spoke volumes for the team of judges: Tom Carson (Chair), Sue Hodder, Glenn James, Louise Radman and journos Nick Ryan and Jane Faulkner + myself. Amongst the Trophies were wines from: Coriole, Walter Clappis, Wirra Wirra, Shingleback, Kay Bros, Battle of Bosworth, SC Pannell (2 Trophies!), and Pertaringa."

Wine Show Judge, Glenn James, summed up the enthusiasm from the judges “Very excited to see some new white varieties leading the charge in McLaren Vale. I think McLaren Vale has finally found its great white hope! And, of course, the Grenache and blends were an instant stand-out – this is what this region does exceptionally well and has done so for a long time”
